Designing my 2D First Person Game!

  • #60, by sir-danielWednesday, 19. July 2017, 19:18 7 years ago
When thinking about it, I cant say that I can remember any First-Person Games that had much (if any) Interaction with other Characters aside from Notes and the like, but I suspect that has to do with the Way Developers  tend to use the First-Person-View. Which is namely to make the Player focus on a Task important to the Game. (This could be shooting or in the Case of The Room, solving Puzzles.) And of Course it sets an Atmosphere. Like in The Room, you are alone and have to escape. In some Games the playable Character can be quite interesting, but in this Case you are supposed to feel like the Character and feel the Importance of the Situation, which First-Person is quite good at. So it makes Sense for Games that want to feel lonely to be in first-Person. But on the other side I dont think that the First-Person-View in itself makes one feel lonely. Actually, now that I am writing this I remember a Game that was all about interacting with other people. For the Majorety of the Game the Player was in first-Person, yet when going to talk to somebody the Game shifted into a view showing both particepants of the Talk. I wonder if there was a Design-Decision behind that... Anyhow, does anyone else know a First-Person-Game that didnt feel lonely ? There is bound to exist one.

If there is such a game or not - do you want to play it? I think anybody doesn't miss this kind of game, so developers don't make one.

I dont think I have ever played that kind of Game so I am unsure of its potential and its enjoyabilety. Either Way, I would still be very curious and would probably try it out.

There are some threads in some forums about "your best 10 or 20" (f.e.:
    https://www.adventure-treff.de/forum/1/23587?start=60).

It seems to me that first person games are not so often in the top twenty, not even Myst.
Think about that. Maybe first person games have their own fandom.

That is interesting. Wouldnt have thought that Dreamfall is so high up...

I am quite sure they have a Fandom, even if that Fandom may have to be shared with the "Escape the Room"-Fandom.

If you want a player to feel isolated & alone while having a first person perspective, then you need to utilize ambient sounds & ambient drone music with music cues mixed into them as needed. Also lighting & overall graphics play a huge part overall as well. If the place you are exploring is dark & unkempt then the player will feel more isolated.

Check out Outlast. I recently got that on sale & I'm struggling to play it as you have no way of fighting back & you never know what's around the next corner. There are a few npc in the game that I've across in the small amount of time I've played the game, but they don't do anything. There are enemies lurking about though which you have to sneak past  or hide from. The game starts out with you going to investigate some old asylum place, then quickly turns into a horror fest of dread while you try to find a way to escape. I think there are some basic environmental puzzles in the game, but mostly it's about exploring & reading documents you find scattered around the place while you search for a way out.

Resident Evil 7 is kind of similar to Outlast except you have weapons. My nerves were on edge when I first started playing it (I'm not a massive fan of horror), but after a couple of encounters (easy mode for me) I didn't feel as nervous about random encounters with the crazy family that was stalking me as you have plenty of ammo & don't die very easily - at least on easy. grin

Oh well! Finally I have the time to write something grin
All that has been said is correct. First-person puzzle exploration games are and always have been niche games.
With players who know what they want. wink
They have no interest in long dialogues and want to be alone in a world to explore.
They hate too many dialogues distracting them from the ultimate goal.
They want realistic worlds to feel inside the game.
They want a story and must be really addictive.
Want to puzzle, machinery, etc etc.
When we released the tech demo of "Anamedia" for testing the quality of what we were doing, the most frequent request were not the dialogues or npc but "I want to see more, want to see what's left and right, I want more environments to explore freely".
Obviously, since I'm alone in making the backgrounds, characters, animations, the cut-scenes and programming with Visionaire it becomes monumental.
In two years I will have made 60% of the game and when I look at the first images I'm never satisfied, I am very critical about what I do, but imagine also create 360° views!
But I'm stubborn and don't give up! This is why the 3D gives me an incredible hand. My renderings take seconds not hours because I don't need the perfection but a basic image to work with.
I'm not doing handpainted backgrounds but a sort of fake 3D style backgrounds smile
To make Riven they used pre-rendered backgrounds with some post processing improvements smile and this is why I'm in search for a solution about a Panoramic plugin wink

I completely forgot to mention "infra" & games like "the vanishing of ethan carter". Those games are nothing but your character walking around on their own exploring things. Sometimes they come across notes or letters or film footage or in case of infra, talk to someone on the other end of a mobile phone, but npc interaction is very minimal or none existent. I would also mention Firewatch which is supposedly empty of npc as well, but I've not gotten round to purchasing it yet. They call those sort of games walking sims & in a way they are kind of like Myst, etc but the players can freely walk around rather than clicking on exits & points of interest with the mouse. They are still technically adventure games I believe.

    haha, no worries. smile

It's amazing what some people can create with 3D graphics/game engines these days.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3LtFrMAvQ4

Some kind of demo/tech showcase of what can be made with UE4. Look at all the different details. I wish I could do 3D but I lack the patience or time to learn.

Really impressive! But for me this is all too realistic. At this point you may as well use a photograph.
I prefer the middle style "realistic but not too much"  grin

Yeah learn 3D modelling take long time and you must have lot of patience Lol grin
