Problem with the Lightmap

  • #1, by Philipp StumppFriday, 29. September 2017, 19:37 7 years ago
    Hi there!

Another day, another problem, thehe smile So i created a lightmap for my scene. (White für beeing visible to black beeing, yeah, totally in the dark). I created it with Photoshop so created a white background and filled two areas with gradients going from black to black with 100% visibility to 0 % visibility. (Have a look at the pics)

But when i run the scene, the character gets darkened at very wrong positions, as you can also see in the pictures i've added. At the barn in the background the little cowboy should be darkened and also behind the big bush at the lower right corner but he gets darkened where he shouldn't. What could have happened? The lightmap has the exact same resolution than the background...

... ah, and it seems that there is a "pillar" of darkness somewhere in the middle of the scene (as you can see on the third picture). This pillar of darker area should'nt exist at all...roll

    Greetings, Phil

Ok, it looks like a bug, but have a look on your own. As you can see, i created a black area in the toper left corner and the character gets darkened at the lower left area.

Visionaire switches the lightmap from top to bottom somehow smile

Hmmm, maybe you can reproduce this with VS 5?

I'm not very savvy on lightmaps myself. I leave them up to the artists, but I'd like to point out a couple of things.

    1. the light map should be scaled down to about 25% of the actual scene width & height for optimization reasons.

    2. the lightmap tints based on the characters position & the characters position is based on where you set the animation center for each of your characters animations. The engine does not auto tint the part of the character that is below the lightmap, it tints the entire character.

    3. I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to use black & white for tinting - again, I'm not an artist. Marian who is sorting out all of the artwork & animations amongst other things for A Little Less Desperation lightmaps are a sort of blue-ish hue for when the character should be the default tint. To be honest I have no clue where he got that color from as I see a green-ish background in the next scenes lightmap, yet I don't remember the character ever being tinted a blue or green color.

i assume that the topleft pixel (white) is maybe not recognized as a really "filled" state. So the lightmap covers only the shape which contains the shadowed areas.
Try using a greyish or other color for test purpose for the "base" color.

couldy you try for test purposes the lightmap from AFRLme or mine here:

    they should scale up.

Nope, didn't work properly. As expected, there is some "shadowing" with Sebastians Lightmaps, but at the very wrong positions.

    Lock at the pic ...

yes, thats whats weird...the scaling is buggy
I tested with the previous working tutorial projekt and can reproduce the issue. So definitively a bug in the "player".

Some other interesting point: working with colors works. As you can see, the character get's a red and a blue shining (Never expected that, but that's great to know!), but as always at wrong positions.

So you should be able to use every color, even black and white, but only with the next version roll Can someone get this on the bug-list?)

    ---
