Bitmap Font Template?

  • #1, by louis-durrantMonday, 20. February 2017, 16:11 7 years ago
My truetype font seems to be bugging out, so I figured I'd try building a bitmap font.

I did a Google and everything pointed to a dead link for a PSD template.

I've tried digging around for this template, but had no luck.

Is it still available on the site? Can anyone link me the template otherwise?

    Much obliged.

The template isn't anything special. Just a psd file for photoshop.

The general idea of the bitmap font template is png/webp file written out like so..

    _ a b c d e f g h i j k l m
    _ n o p q r s t u v w x y z
    _ A B C D E F G H I J K L M
    _ N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
    _ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 ! ? ' " @ #

    etc.

The lines have to start with _ as that signifies the beginning of the line. You should only use easy to read fonts. It also helps if you add a bit of stroke around them as the engine has trouble picking out characters sometimes. For example " double quotation mark can end up split into 2 characters but if it has stroke around it's likely there will be no gap between the 2 ' marks ' & thus the engine/editor will correctly detect it as a single character. Destructive fonts, handwritten fonts & fonts that are messy or uneven will probably not be detected correctly.

    This worked perfectly, thanks!

    No problem. wink

P.S: it doesn't have to be exactly in the order or the amount of characters/letters across that I wrote in my example. The files/lines can be as large as you like.

As for the ttf/otf fonts. You just need to try a few out & figure out which work & look ok. One of most important things is that the ttf/otf fonts should be 100% free to use (check places like dafont) or if they require a license to use commercially then make sure you have the necessary license to include with your game. Anyway, I recommend using simple, clear & easy to read fonts, though you should be able to get away with handwritten type fonts with ttf/otf too - not sure about destructed/eroded fonts.

As AFRLme said: it isn't something mysterious with this file. You just have to check the character order.
I have it somewhere on my PC, but with an unusual font. I should change the font first into Arial or Tahoma.

    Hi there,

I am the one who created the font template. I know, the download server was shut down recently. Since I could not find any link to this file on the Visionaire homepage anymore, I thought no-one would mind its absence and just let it disappear.

For anyone who still needs it: You can either use darren-beckett's link in the post above (it looks like that is my file) or download it from my server (text file with explenation included).

Thanks for your helpfulness! I don't miss it because I downloaded the file a year ago. wink wink

But at the time I can't access to post it because of a running backup.
