Particle system and overlaying

Is it possible to overlay images (objects, characters, etc.) on top of the particle system applied to a scene?

I’ve noticed that my interfaces are overlayed (i.e. interface in front, particles behind it), but I can’t seem to place an object in the scene and have it appear in front of the particles. I’ve tried to change the object centre but it didn’t have any effect.

An example of what I would like to achieve is rain on the outside of a room (as seen through a window).

In your scene tab select an object and go to the effects tab of this object on the lower part of the screen. You can bind a particle effect to this object. The effect will appear in front of the selected object. But if the controlled character is by definition able to walk in front of this object, he will step in front if the particle effect as well. If you wish to have the particles behind that object you can create an empty dummy of the object and place it's layer beneath the actual object.
