Escape - The Cellar released

I have just published this new free game, my first written in VS5.

It's a first person single location "escape the room" type point & click puzzle, fairly simple & designed to take only a few hours to play.

My intention is that this will be the first in a series of these single room puzzles, as short play games seem to be very popular judging by the downloads I get.

It seems that people prefer a simple zip file shipment rather than an installer, so that's how I've shipped it.

What a joy VS5 editor is to use compared to the old version, thanks, you did a good job on it.

    Cheers,
    minibigs

Minute not hours you mean? I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing though. Logic is not winning!

If logic ruled I would have carefully pushed the bin bag under the door, popped out the key & pulled it back under. Instead it seems I have to use the bin bag on the press thing. I would have prised the freezer open with screwdriver instead of using the screw.

No idea what I'm supposed to do next.

I prefer zip to install offline. I hate installers because I'm offline most time and I need admin rights to install online. With admin rights online it is often better to have a bitcoin account... wink

Was thinking the same thing, except I couldn't be bothered to actually reply & ask. Too lazy the day.

An installer is only some 100K. It starts to install the game (or some tool) by downloading and installing online. If I download a zip I expect to have the whole game files in there. Because I often use Linux for surfing I can't use installers (maybe Firefox for Win. The browser usually works with an online installer (<1 MB); if you want to download the whole paket (>50 MB) and install later you have to search in the Mozilla archive), because it isn't windows. Downloading the Adobe reader or some Microsoft free tools to install it's the same.
I download the zip with Linux, change to Windows later, check with a virus tool and install offline.

a normal installer installs the game which was packed before WITH the installer and there is NO need to download anything by it while the Installation process is running.

You are referring to some exceptions like the adobe installers or some antivirus ones which download the most recent version before installing anything. This is an exception for programs which have lots of updates.

But as said when an installer is mentioned anywhere its mostly the normal form you know from the "good old times" ...

Thx, mate. It was about 3 years of work, since I wrote most of it myself.

Aha, so it can't be that easy then if you are stuck! (joke).

Seriously though,  the average completion time of the (very few) people who have left me feedback say that it took them between 2-4 hours. Some commented the same as you re logic, others found it perfectly logical.
There's no accounting for individuals I guess. I agree especially about the screwdriver / fridge though.

One thing  might do is try to get more testers on board before I publish games. At the moment I rely on friends and family -  who aren't always the most unbiased I guess - as it's just a hobby for me.

Try freezing the bin bag after you fill it with juice & it's not the bin bag you push under the door.

This is my point. Some people understand point & click game logic. Years ago when I was a kid, I did myself as I had a good imagination. These days I tend to think more in terms of real world logic.

I haven't managed to get the juice in the bag yet. It just says something about not being able to work the press, so I assume I need something to get it to twist, but I'm having difficulty locating things - pixel hunting in this day & age (aisus!).

The press needs lubricating ... try other items with the stick.

I tried to design it specifically to avoid pixel hunting,  as it's one of my pet adventure game hates.
I would much rather try to rely on providing a logical solution.

I think next time I will concentrate more on giving valid reasons why other solutions will not work ... i.e. explain why the screwdriver can't be used to force the doorlock, or why the bag is too flimsy to push under the door, etc.

I've included a download link for a text file containing the solution.
