I believe the limit was added because it is no longer freeware, it is an evaluation version for testing out the software before deciding whether or not you want to purchase one of the licensed versions.
The reasoning behind the limit - as far as I'm aware - is to encourage people to purchase the software & thus because they purchased the software, they should feel more inclined to actually work on their games & ideas unlike in the freeware version where most people get bored after a while & give up.
