Particles that never die

  • #1, by dionous 8 years ago Zitieren
    Hi all,

Does anyone know how to make particles that never die? I just want to make some dust particles floating around for ever, but it seems that VS is killing them anyway (i have maxed Life setting to 10)

    Thanks!

I'm not very savvy with the particle system, but you could do what Daedalic did for their most recent game: Pillars of the Earth. They used the new display video on/in scene system with blend mode activated for displaying the snow particle effects over the scene as a video. You could probably do the same thing with dust particles. Just create a short looping video & overlay that. It does require more system resources than the particle system (probably), but a small looping video should be fine & you probably have better control of how you setup your particles for the video in after effects or something similar. Or you could create it as regular animation & export as a video.

Interesting approach with the new video plugin, thanks mate.

A major issue with the current particle system is that it is still undocumented so let's cross fingers.

haha, I have no clue how to use it either. Never bothered learning it & the documentation on the wiki for the previous particle system contains loads & loads of pages of text. It's basically a novel in itself.

All I want are small tooltips to pop up when I hover over a section with a quick & dirty explanation of what each parameter/block is for. At least that way I could use it without having to bore myself with the novella.

Oh yes, and you know what is the pittiest thing? That it's so good and powerful, so much unused potential here...

If it can be useful these are the settings that I used in my game to get the effect of dust.
The game resolution is 1280x720 so I think you'll have to change the center of the emission point.
Unfortunately, my screen resolution is 1360x768 and I had to break into several files the screen capture.
I hope it's understandable anyway grin

Thanks for sharing your settings! Hmm, what a nice library we could have for various effects..

That's certainly an idea. Maybe some people would be willing to share a ved & some image resources showcasing some different particles they've created?

Well, I have only two particles now. But I can share them, maybe are useful to someone smile
I just have to create a ved file for them.

When I make the particles for the fire and the fog, I will share them with pleasure smile

Two small files with the settings for dust and for a sci-fi teleporter.

Shame we can't export/import preset files. Maybe in the form of xml data or something. I think it would be a nice solution.
