How to plan the process of developing a Point and Click Adventure

  • #1, by rob-robbersonSunday, 06. December 2020, 00:12 3 years ago
How do you guys plan the making of your adventure?
Do you write the story first?
Do you do a lot of "proof of fun" work?
What about the artwork? The backgrounds and all that stuff.
Maybe the artwork ans music is the last thing to do?

I want to make my first point and click game and am wondering how you guys with
    experience do it.

Articy Draft is supposed to be very good:

you can use mindmap software there's quite a few free ones that are useful, I've heard that some people use text game engines like Twine

Or good old pen and paper!

You can use place holder art and change it any time. likewise music... music can drive you loopy there's going to be a lot of build, test, fix, test, fix, break, pull hair out moments and repetive music isn't good lol

Just have fun, I personally just run with  ideas and do as I go, I lose interest if I try and plan.
Entering contests are a great way to learn, often have themes and a time limit

Articy Draft is really good. Bit pricey if you buy it outright. There's also a subscription option for it available on Steam - don't know about their actual store.

As for mind map software, I highly recommend yEd, it's 100% free & comes with a lot of options/features for different node shapes & sorting.

Pen & paper & post-it notes & white-boards, etc are also valid. A lot of people still plan things out that way because you can actually place things around your room & organize them in a way that lets you see the whole idea easily & quickly.

In regards to working with other people, articy draft has server options available, but I believe it's really expensive. A nice cheap & possibly free alternative is to use online sites/apps, such as ASANA, wunderlist, etc as they let you add multiple people & create & assign tasks to them, & change the task completion state, & add comments, upload media, etc.

    Thank you guys.

    https://www.articy.com/en/ is a bit pricy.
Will have a look at hacknplan. They have a free version that may fit my needs.
Using a mindmap seems smart. Already got a licence for Mind Maps Pro, I think this will work out.

In a bundle? I don't remember seeing it in a bundle. Fanatical kept selling off the keys for a couple of euros while they had them in stock after articy draft 3 was released. I kept tweeting about the sales on the VS twitter account.

I got gifted a key, I assumed it was from a bundle.. I've never actually used it, its one of those things that lives in my steam account gathering virtual dust

Wether on Steam nor on Fanatical you can get a license for AD 2
You can only buy AD 3

Because Articy Draft 2 no longer exists. It was a while back when they were selling off remaining keys for cheap. I was actually talking to Nigec as that's where I believe he got articy draft 2 from.

I must have missed that one. I actually bought articy draft 2 years ago for 50% off on steam, if I remember correctly.
