Curious about newgrounds

    Hey everyone. I just rediscovered Newgrounds.com today. I heard of it years ago as a place to share animations and music, but apparently it's good for sharing games too. As far as I can tell though it's only for flash/swf games. I was wondering if it's possible to turn a Visionaire game into a SWF somehow to share on Newgrounds. It would be a good way to get broad feedback on game mechanics and puzzles while still working on your game smile

    Not sure about the flash thing, but I would recommend exporting a demo & sharing it on something like gamejolt.io &/or indiedb.com.

    Thanks! I hadn't even heard of those before grin I presume they both accept the Visionaire file then? I signed up to Game Jolt and tried to have a look but they don't mention LUA code or Visionaire Studio engine.

    I meant export your demo as an .exe file for windows. I believe they also support mac & linux equivalents too. You need a mac to export your game for mac though - or rather it's recommended to export the game from the same os as the target os.

    I'm not sure about gamejolt rules but some of members on here have posted demos to it. As for indiedb, it takes a while to setup an account & there's a waiting period of a few days before they will create your games page / news articles & so on as they verify the content to make sure it's acceptable.

    Sorry, I should've been more specific lol. On Game Jolt when you go to upload your game there are drop down tabs to select what script or game engine you used. There's stuff like C++ or Game Maker Studio but nothing about LUA or Visionaire. But that's ok, from what you said it probably doesn't matter grin
    Game Jolt says they allow works in progress which sounds great. You get to have feedback on your game as you're making it. grin

    Visionaire isn't exactly that well known. I'm sure they have a misc / other category, no?

    Indiedb is also good for letting people know about your game.

    I signed up to both grin They both look good. Thanks so much for suggesting them. By the looks of the scope of the sites, those will nail coverage pretty well smile

    There's another place you might consider, but it's more of a test run for crowdfunding campaigns as it gives you an idea of how to sort out a campaign & also generates interest & if you get enough votes then I believe square are supposed to pledge money to your campaign whenever you launch one.

    Wow that sounds interesting. I had a quick look and I'll have to sit down and figure out their terms and conditions etc.
    I personally was going to fund my first game myself, and down-scope it accordingly. I wanted to make some free games and see if I can get something all the way to Steam and see how that goes down before I work on something that I'm hoping will make me good money. Have you ever played a game called Scratches? That was released on Steam and drummed up heaps of interest for the game they're working on now, called Asylum I believe. I was hoping to manage something like that eventually. Time isn't a huge factor for me, so I'm hoping to get a bit of trial and error down first.
    What is your take on crowdfunding? Do you think it's important?

    Nope I've not heard of that game.

    As for crowdfunding: I think it depends on what you have in mind. Can you self-fund your own project? Do you just need a bit of extra cash to get you over the edge, or for hiring some third party for something you can't do yourself? Can you find a publisher? etc etc.

    If you can do everything yourself without needing anyone else's help, then really all you need money for is to support yourself (hours invested, food, bills etc & maybe any resources / licenses you might need to purchase). If not then you will probably need to find extra income from elsewhere.

    By the way, I believe you need to pay steam $99 or something along those lines (not sure on exact amount - I forget) for adding the option to your account to be able to submit your games to greenlight. I think it's a single time fee as it will get added to your account app list.

    Ah ok. I earn money through a advertising on a website I made, so I probably won't need any extra funding for bills, programs etc. I've nearly saved everything I need for a more powerful computer, Zbrush and some other programs. But I'm not sure yet if I'll need a programmer or not because so far I've proved to be very hopeless at it hahaha. Hopefully I'll get better wink
    Yes, you're right, I'm pretty sure steam is $100 to list games, but it's a once off payment which I think great grin
