Background Image Issue

  • #1, by ygmantellFriday, 28. July 2017, 15:42 7 years ago
So I had a background Image that I wanted to extend and add more space to, so I did this in photoshop and overwrote the original file.  This has always worked fine, as VS automatically updates.

But this time, the new image I made is just showing up as completely transparent in VS.  I exported multiple versions of it as PNGs and re-imported them into VS and nothing seems to work.

I tried using the image as a scene object too just to test it, but it's still transparent.

This is an issue I have never encountered before. Any ideas?

    Thanks so much!

PS: Whats with all the spam today?!

    Bloody human spammers. roll

I believe Calli is working on a moderation module/class that can be assigned to some of us forum members, so we can remove/edit posts, ban members & so on. No ETA on that though as far as I'm aware. Only thing I know is that these spambo bastards are getting past the captcha way too easily.

Are you using VS5? I've had same issue when it comes to replacing existing files with a new file of the same name. Try renaming the file & then adding it. Probably a bug.

    Haha, yeah.

So Ive tried that, I renamed it, made copies, exported it multiple times and nothing works.
The image shows up fine in any other program, so I don't think its a Photoshop export issue.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Got to be a bug mate. Simon will probably read this post & look into it.

Okay, thanks for your help.  In the mean time I'll see what I can do to the image to see if that has any affect.

Okay, so I scaled the image down to its original size (it's pixel art that I scale up) and it shows up in the editor.  Of course now it's too small...
Is there a size limit?  It's the biggest scene in my game...

    Thanks!

    EDIT: 4000x2400 when scaled up

Ah, yeah there's a limit of sorts, but no one really knows what it is. I think it's approx 3x default game resolution (1080p), but I think there's more of a limitation on the height than width.

You could create a transparent png at the size you want the background to be. Next you will want to cut up the background you wanted to add into tiles. Now create & add them as scene objects & position them as needed. You should now be able to see them in the editor.

Quick question: does the scene show when you run the game itself?

Try to insert a totally wrong picture first and then go back to the correct one. Sometimes it works because Vis delete an intern cache or sth like that.

Because the pic has been shown as transparent it could be a wrong channel interpretation.

Hm... Yeah, it does.  Of course the waysystems are all messed up and the player shows up in a random position on screen because it's a bigger image than before (but I was gonna just manually fix them), but it's there.

    EDIT: @Machtnix
I did that and that image shows up fine.  But it doesn't fix the issue when I re-import the correct one.

EDIT:  If the limit is 3x 1080, then I guess my image is too large (width is 4000).  Would that be the issue?

I guess what I will do is just cut the image in half and use change scene actions to switch between them.

1080 is the height. I recommend 2x width of 1920 (3840) only which I believe is 4K resolution.

You will have to make some tests. Try creating some copies of your background & cropping them to different sizes & start from largest size & work backwards until one shows.

Alternatively, split the scene into 2.
