Using waypoints only?

Is it possible to use connected waypoints only to define a fixed path for walking? Or I am forced to create a small walkable area around my paths? I am planing a papercutting/silhouette adventure like the Lotte Reiniger's movies (examples of her great work see below) and in normal case I need "walking lines" only.

Other question: is it possible to use the left and right animation of an character only? Or I am forced to define back and front sprites?

    Thanks.

Sorry, you will have to limit the area the character can walk in via the way borders. In regards to the walk animations: If you don't provide north/south animations (remove the tables completely) then it will use whatever animations are available (west, east, diagonals etc).

Ok, that is more work for me but possible to handle.
    Thanks.

PS: perhaps I could write a little tool (based on xml data), that generates an "walkable corona" around my defined waypoint paths automatically...hm.... I love such small puzzles. PPS: Not, what I need, but very interesting: http://www.geosensor.net/papers/duckham08.PR.pdf , PPPS: That is the right way: click
