game crash after playing video (avi)

Hi guys,
we are currently experiencing many game crashes after playing any video (avi). What's the solution?
It's a codec issue?
We run the game in Windows 7.

Try converting your videos to .mkv (matroska) video format with the VP8 codec & ogg audio. .mkv is the recommended format to use for Visionaire Studio.

As for your issue: I don't have a clue. Does the crash popup the crash window & allow you to generate a dump file? If it does then you can send it to David (BigStans) or Simon (SimonS) via pm.

Are there any errors listed in the log file?

Hi,Im not sure if is the correct site to post this, is my first post. im try make transparent my inventory backgrund. Why is black ? If i use a transparent image(png) dont use the tranparency!! ..I want that only see the objects in the scene, not background. Or at least, how can change this default black background. Thanks a lot.

I'd like to bring more details about the issue (as I'm working with millenium2k on this project).
The project is ASA and the main template of the game in Visionaire is the same than in Catyph. As a result I can compare the 2 games when there are problems and see if it happens in the 2 of them.

The exact problem in ASA is:
you play the game in a scene --> a video event starts (AVI) --> the video plays correctly and entirely --> the game comes back to the play scene --> the game crashes instantly.

This is random and can happen when any video is concerned. Sometimes I can go further in the game, but there's always a moment where it crashes after playing a video.

Unfortunately, converting videos to MKV is not an option anymore. The game has been built with AVI videos, so changing the extension means importing the videos again in each scene. There are too many of them so we have to continue with AVI.

However, I think the encoding is not the problem. In Catyph, I have AVI videos in Xvid too, and everything works well. There is a video between each scene, and the game doesn't crash. So the AVI/Xvid videos are possible and I think it's an issue to be found in ASA only.

Is it possible that having videos in a different resolution can cause problems? The pictures in the game are in 1920x800 while the videos are in 1200x500 (same ratio for both: 2.4).

When the game crashes it doesn't show any message. Well I don't remember, I have to check again, but it doesn't crash all the time and not always at the same place. All I can say is that it crashes after playing a video and coming back to the scene.

You can replace the file paths directly in the ved-file in a text-editor, e.g. replace ".avi" with ".mkv". Then write a script to convert all your avi files to mkv with the right codec. This shouldn't be too hard.

I think it's very likely that the video is the reason for the crash. And AVI is just a container format, there are many different codecs (for video and audio) with different settings.

Ok thanks a lot Alex! I'll work on converting everything to MKV+VP8 and see with millenium2k how they feel with replacing the .avi in the ved. Will let you know if it solves the issue!

By replacing inside of the .ved, Alex is actually talking about right clicking on the .ved & opening it up in a program like "sublime text" or "notepad ++" etc.

I recommend using Sublime Text (probably the best text editor available - the evaluation version has no time limit restriction).

You should make sure you make a backup copy of the .ved before editing via a text editor though, just to be on the safe side.

What Alex was proposing you should do is activate the find/search & search for all instances of .avi & then you click replace all button & then type .mkv. Then save it & voila, all instances of .avi will have been replaced with .mkv.

Nice & simple.

P.S: you should make sure all videos have the same name as their avi counterpart.
