Tutorial files

Hi Guys. I'm trying to open the glenFX tutorial files in the free version of the engine so I can follow along. I get an error telling me they may have been created in v2 and the editor updates them. They still don't work though. Is this an incompatibility issue?, Do I need the paid version of Visionaire or am I just doing something stupid:-)

Any help at all would be much appreciated Dave

    probably an incompatibility issue ...

I've not tried opening the files before but as you mentioned they were created quite a few versions back so it's possible that they use some methods/code that have been changed in the newer versions.

did you get the files from here?

the free version of Visionaire Studio is the same as the paid version(s), minus the build/export game option.

the files inside from the link I provided are actually an exported .exe version of the demo & are not project files.

there is however a demo that comes with VS that can be found inside the visionaire3 folder in c:/program files/visionaire3/

Yes that is where I got them from but as they are not project files no wonder they didn't work. I guess I didn't think of that. I thought /hoped it was the kind of tutorial I could work along with. Looks like my learning curve will be a little steeper. A shame. Visionaire could do with more doc's and tutorials. Thanks for the reply

the best thing to start with are the video tutorials by Suro ...

check the wiki found via the wiki link on the main menu ...

    there's a wiki I created called "sticky topics ..." https://www.visionaire-studio.net/wiki/article/sticky-topics...!.html

I have added loads of useful links & information about Visionaire Studio into categories. also if you check the templates section of the forum, you will find some useful project files to learn various things from wink there's menu's, various interfaces & even a couple of game examples like Nigec's first person template or his monkey island 1 style gui etc ...

Glenfx's step by step tutorial is useful too - if you don't mind reading.

in regards to the learning curve; it shouldn't take you very long to learn all the basics & then some as Visionaire Studio works on simple logic.

take a second to think how something should work & then if you can't figure it out just ask for help on here wink

Cheers Matey. I have watched the Suro vids. Very clear. They recommended the Glen FX ones so that is where i went next.

The sticky topics list is fantastic - well done that man.

I think probably what I need to do is to plan out a basic demo of my own and do some basic animation and then use the resources as I go.

    Thanks for the help!

    you're welcome wink

hopefully Suro will find some free time to make some more videos - here's hoping grin I'd make some myself but I'm afraid my thick yorkshire/wakefield accent would bore people to sleep + my copy of camtasia doesn't seem to like my current version of windows!

I'll be adding plenty more useful things to the wiki in general ... in between working on my own game & currently trying to figure out what's wrong with a lua script someone else wrote.

best of luck with your project!

Ah. Another Northerner. The Yorkshire accent would not be a problem here. :-) I had the same problem with Camtasia and eventually went with something called Flashback Express (free version) for some instructional vids for clients. You might find it useful should you have the need. (it is way cheaper even if you do get the full version) I have to agree though I hate the sound of my own voice on these things.

Lua script? that sounds pretty advanced.

As to my own project. There isn't actually one at the moment, more of a vague dream/ midlife crisis. I'm an animator and have realised I prefer games to films and should probably do something about that even if it does lean towards an interactive short film. Being an animator I am also far too aware of how much work is involved so small steps.

Best of luck with your project

aye although been living in Spain for the past 9 years or so ...

I have a music producer friend who uses an open source screen recorder as he also had issues with camtasia so I'll ask him sometime in the future for the link - I like open-source stuff whenever possible (well it's free & often better than the commercial stuff)

I thought the same thing about LUA Script at first when I looked at it, as it does not make much sense logically speaking - I prefer when code is like writing a story; html, visual basic, .net etc - but I've soon picked it up I think smile

you probably won't need LUA for your game unless you need to achieve something that can't be done with any of the dropdown/tab action choices included in the editor.

there will probably be some extra action choice additions to the editor when the next release comes out - soonish hopefully wink

I recently started a basic lua syntax & examples article in the wiki page - but I haven't added much to it yet - it will cover most of the basics you need to learn lua & will also include all the exclusive Visionaire Studio commands found on a link at the bottom of the main VS LUA wiki page here.

if you are a decent drawer/animator then you shouldn't have many issues as I think that most of the hardest work involved is the graphics! - once you have them sorted, it shouldn't take you long to add them into VS & add actions etc.

P.S: if you offer your art/animation services pro bono or commission based then don't forget to join some of the promotion groups found via "groups" on the main menu.

add yourself ... create a new post & include your username at the beginning of the title. read the General Rules post before posting mind wink

    safe smile

I tried the open source stuff but couldn't find one that worked properly with my machine :-)

I am way more image based than code. I learned a bit of Action script but didn't seem to retain it. LUA does look like it may be a useful thing to learn in the fullness of time. My animation Software - Anime Studio also seems to use it.

Drawing and Animation is a bit time consuming but I think have the hang. If you are interested you can see my work here: www.squeakypics.co.uk.

I'll look into the group thing. Sounds interesting. This is all research at the minute. It is something I would love to do but I think one of the hardest things is going to be finding the time - isn't it always

    Cheers!

    indeed it is wink

I've already had a look at your portfolio ... nice range of styles going on smile

I had a go with anime studio pro but wasn't too keen on it ... I'm more of a photoshop user myself but photoshop doesn't do vector which is a shame as I couldn't wrap my head around how adobe set up the pen tool in illustrator - no idea why it doesn't work the same as ps roll

I can do lineart etc but it takes me ages to draw even simple things so I'm planning on leaving the character & scene bg art to other people.

I dabble in music production, music promotion & web design amongst other media related things - although I have no intentions of making the music myself razz

yes time is an issue ... I often seem to find myself on here helping out or getting distracted by some american tv series boxsets!

I am still in the planning, research & script writing stages myself but I have made a start on the graphics for the various menus.

in regards to LUA; if you plan on making a commercial based game then I would recommend checking out my "Advanced Menu Example" found in the templates section as it shows how to achieve a professional menu along with lua for reading/writing your config settings to a file so it remembers them each time you launch your game smile

Anime Studio Pro is a pretty sensible way of creating assets for an adventure game. In its basics you do drawings and then put bones in them and move them around. You can even have photoshop textures. The latest version of AS has a thing called 'smart bones' which alows you to link point position to bone rotation. It makes rigging much easier.

I am not a big fan of Adobe (aside from After effects) Illustrator in particular I find takes far too many clicks to do anything. I use Xara designer Pro as my vector Swiss army knife (it even does websites now)

Oh yes. distractions......(wanders off to get some left over Christmas cake.)
