Artist/Musician turned videogame creator- Just wanted to introduce myself!

    Hi everyone

I'm Frito Zanzibar, and i am a new member here- i just wanted to say hi to all the great and helpful members at the Visionaire forums before i jump in and really start learning-

Ive already spent a few hours reading through topics here, and have learned alot just from that! I do plan on asking lots of questions once i get into my game making journey, so im sure you will all get used to me being around- let me apologize now for the amount of questions i will inevitably be asking heh heh

I am painting all my own backgrounds and characters and doing all my music myself (as i imagine alot of you also are doing) and have some background in making games with RPGMaker, but i soon realized the type of game i wanted to make is best done with Visionaire studio- so here i am! I am hopeful to be able to share my knowledge about the artistic side of things like background and animation techniques and music creation, if people can share their knowledge about lua scripting which i have no clue about

Before i start posting here more in depth, id like to be polite and ask what the necro posting policy is here so i dont offend anyone and whether i am allowed to ask multiple questions per post or make multiple separate threads. And again i apologize to the mods if i post in the wrong sections at first until i get a better idea where each topic should go.

Also, I plan on sharing alot of my art and design ideas and sketches and stuff here for critique if that is ok? Should i make just one thread of my design processes?
I sincerely value any and all constructive criticism and ideas

I am very probably the most psyched member here about making games, its just about all i can think of, i really need to get my life together so i started thinking outside the box, and i figured i have the skills needed to maybe make a good game people will enjoy.

good luck to everyones projects out there! If we work together we can all help each other finish them!

cheers and feel free to ask me any questions about anything!

A'llo & welcome to the VS community smile

We don't actually have any moderators at the minute as Thomas & Calli don't seem to have added member groups to the forum cms yet.

Personally I don't mind threads containing random posts & questions etc, but they can get somewhat confusing so it is best if you want to ask loads of questions that aren't necessarily related to one another in separate threads.

In regards to Lua Script: you can technically make a game of commercial caliber, without having to type a single line of code; of course, this depends on the artwork, animation, music & sound design. You can make your game via the action parts & query options that come with the Visionaire Studio editor. Having said that, you can however create custom/advanced functions, features & general all round better control of existing functions via Lua Script; if you are willing to learn it.

    Regards,
    Lee smile

thanks for explaining abit about the forum here and the nice welcome

I am definitely going to learn as much Luascipt as i can, i know other games use it as well for modding like Don't Starve

Alot of my game vision is about branching text trees and repercussions about how you interact with people (think early fallout games) so if i can wrap my head around the logic of the ifs and thens then i will be ok i think

But with Lua i will need some hand holding at first heh heh

thanks again for the kind words

I like progressive branching storyline & dialogs myself - they certainly make games much more interesting & are even better if you add a bit of tension to force the player to make snap decisions/perform actions in x amount of time.

if queries are a lot more flexible in Lua script than in the VS editor, as you have more options available & can create complex queries a lot easier than in the editor.

I started a "Learn some Lua" page on our new VS wiki a while back - http://wiki.visionaire-tracker.net/wiki/Basic_lua - I will be adding some more Lua stuff to the wiki at some point, including more complex stuff & various scripts & examples written by myself & other members of the community.

The pages I've linked below are fundamental for using Lua script with Visionaire Studio...

http://wiki.visionaire-tracker.net/wiki/Scripting - a basic guide to using Lua in VS...
http://wiki.visionaire-tracker.net/wiki/Data_Structure - a list of VS Lua commands...
http://wiki.visionaire-tracker.net/wiki/Player_Commands - VS exclusive Lua functions
http://wiki.visionaire-tracker.net/wiki/Common_Commands - VS common Lua functions
