Welcome to the [WIP] thread of Zak McKracken goes looking for Hot Coffee (in several wrong places).

Let me start with the download link.

Please note that this is far from anything finished, it's rather an elaborate tech demo. This is the result of me learning to script in the http://www.visionaire-studio.net" target="_blank" title="http://www.visionaire-studio.net">Visionaire Engine. I have been heavily involved in the http://www.mckracken.net" target="_blank" title="http://www.mckracken.net">Zak McKracken: Between Time and Space from 2005 to 2008 working on animations for this Zak McKracken fan-sequel. A German version was released in 2008. A directors cut including an English translation is soon to be released. http://www.mckracken.net/cms/between-timespace-english/artic..." target="_blank" title="http://www.mckracken.net/cms/between-timespace-english/artic...">More on my work on this project can be found here.

As I started getting into the engine, this test project of mine, using assets from the coming DirectorsCut, started to grow from just a single game screen to several scenes and a scripted intro and a homage to the dream sequence in the original Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders.

This thing kind of took a life of it's own and I started playing with the thought of making a prequel to the fan game we released. But now I'm facing a few problems:

    • I know my way around Flash and very little of Fireworks but I can't really create graphics from scratch. I need some artist to help me with that.
    • While I have a story outline in my head, I'm not a writer and not a native English speaker. Someone who can help develop the story and write dialogues and item comments would be of great help.

This is as far as I could make it on my own, I have the intro to the game up and running, I have all the locations (for which I had graphics available) I want to use done, I got the load/save system up and running and I tried to get rid of every bug I could find.

This is what I would like to add to a final game:

    • A few new locations, appr. 4 - 5 screens, but this is depending on where the story goes.
    • 1 or 2 characters to interact with.
    • Voice acting, at least for the intro sequence.

I made this thread for 2 reasons, to get some general feedback and maybe find some people with spare time that might be interested in helping me out with this. Keep in mind this is all unpaid work, no money to be made.

But let's start with that feedback part...

Give it a try. Current goal is getting to Mexico. But let me warn you, some puzzles in the airplane sequence are a bit on the tough side.

So I hereby challenge you to make it to Mexico.

TL;DR:Check it out and let me know what you think. And if you have the talent and time you might consider helping me getting this made in to a full game.

Great... Demo!!!!! Just got to Mexico... does it end there or can you do anything else on the pyramid? I really liked it a lot. Great animations and the puzzles are done very well. Like you said, the puzzles on the plane are a bit harder but nothing too complicated. The dream sequence was cool too!!!

The only thing I did not like is that the descriptions of the objects (when you hover the cursor over a useable object in the scene) are displayed at the bottom of the screen. I don't know if it's just me but I takes me a little out of the flow of the game when you look for usable things on screen and each time you have to look down to see if you are on top of something or not. Hope you understand what I mean.

Besides that... very very cool!!! Congrats and keep going!!!!

    ps:
The bag you find in the plane... at first I didn't know how to open it, I believe it was double click. I think it would be better the Zak opens it using the richt click (looking into it).

Thanks for the impressions. Very pleased to read you liked it!

That's all I have done so far. I have ideas for some of these places but I'm kind of stuck on my own by now. Most of my ideas need additinal characters and scenes which I'm not able to make on my own.
Btw. there is a small "puzzle" left at the Northpole. There actually is a way across the water on the right side of the screen.

I'm glad that the airplane sequence was doable without any help, I was afraid it was too "out there". (btw. that "chemistry" actually works)

As for the item text, I totally see you point. might try to test how it works when displaying the text next to the cursor. I also want to streamline the interface a bit.
Btw. there is an indicator when your cursor is over a hotspot, it turns red. But maybe that's not obvious enough.

As for the bag, I will think about that. Maybe I'll just add the opening to the look at action.

I can understand that you want to display the action text somewhere else on the screen because it keep the scene nice and clean. In my game I am displaying the text right next to the cursor but like it said, it seems to clutter the screen somehow. Maybe somebody has another idea?!

Weird that I didn't notice the cursor turning red... maybe that's because its blinking all the time. hehehe
