Glitches in v.3.5 demo game?

04/28/2011, 18:04
Hi; I just downloaded Visionaire Studio and tried out the demo game to see what it's capable of, but I ran into some problems. I don't know whether these are issues with Visionaire Studio itself or just with the demo game, but either way I figured I'd bring them up.

First of all: I really like the combination of the icon menu and verb coin action selection methods, allowing the player to choose actions either from the menu at the bottom of the screen or by clicking and dragging -- I don't remember ever seeing that done before. However, the verb coin (the small click-and-drag icon menu) seems to be slightly broken -- the icons don't correspond to what they should. I was stuck for a while because I couldn't figure out how to use inventory items... turned out that it worked just fine if I clicked on the Use icon and then on the inventory item, but if I clicked and held on the inventory item and then dragged to the verbcoin Use icon, the game reacted like I'd choosen Look instead. (I hope I'm explaining well enough what I mean.)

Second: I don't know if this is a bug or something to do with my system configuration, but... I wasn't able to save the game in the demo game. I can get to the menu, but the Save button doesn't seem to do anything. The arrow gets a yellow outline when it's over the Save button, so it looks like it should do something, but nothing happens. The demo game is short enough that not being able to save isn't a big problem, but of course for a longer game this could be an issue. Maybe it's because I was running the game from the editor? Maybe if I compiled and ran the game separately this wouldn't happen? Still, it seemed strange that there was no error message given or anything... it just didn't work. (Or I wasn't doing it right, maybe, but I tried hitting the Save button with and without selecting a slot first, and it never worked.)

Hi,

1. I'm quite sure this must be a problem of the demogame. I'll have a look when I have time for it. Or maybe somebody else could check this out.

2. One reason could be that you work as a user with limited access rights. By default the savegames are stored in a folder called 'savegames' located in the folder of the .ved file. If you don't have rights to create files and directories in the application directory storing a savegame will fail. If you enter a 'company name' and a 'game name' in the game properties the savegames will be stored in the local user directory. This also works for users with limited rights. You could try this out.

That seems to be it... if I run the program with administrator rights the save works just fine.
